In the United States – A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), a physician and surgeon who treats the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.

In Canada , the United Kingdom, and Ireland both terms, chiropody and podiatry are used. Podiatry is the new name given to chiropody initiated in 1993. Both are considered foot doctors in Canada, the UK and Ireland and both have acquired the same qualifications and experience.

A pedorthist is a professional who has specialized training to modify footwear and employ supportive devices to address conditions which affect the feet and lower limbs. They are trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics, and the appropriate use of corrective footwear including shoes, shoe modifications and other pedorthic devices.
